Yahoo’s acquisition spree adds Cooliris to the mix
After barely a fortnight of bringing programmatic video ad platform Brightroll into its fold, Yahoo has now acquired start up photo app maker Cooliris. Founded in 2006, Cooliris was known for creating a ‘3D wall’ for navigating between photos and other media content. It also created a platform for mobile ads called Adjitsu, which it sold to Singtel’s Amobee division in 2012.
Under its most recent avenues, Cooliris has explored the mobile app domain through which the users can browse photos across media platforms such as Facebook, Flickr and Dropbox. Through its partnership with Renren, Yandex and Baidu, the app maker seeks growth in the Asian market.
On its website, Cooliris said, “Cooliris is passionate about creating fast, fluid mobile experiences for content and communication – as exemplified by our newest product, BeamIt. Yahoo has a clear vision and unwavering commitment to making mobile an intuitive and effortless experience. This makes Yahoo the perfect partner for Cooliris, and we are excited to come together to bring indispensable products to a worldwide audience.”
The Chief Executive Officer of Yahoo, Marissa Mayer reiterated that Yahoo has focussed significantly on its mobile strategy; the acquisition of mobile messaging app, MessageMe, was on those lines.
Yahoo describes the acquisition as talent acquisition and has not disclosed its plans to do anything with the existing products. In addition, BeamIt messenger and Cooliris app marker will continue to operate as individual entities.
