Yahoo shuts down its video service Yahoo Screen
Yahoo has shut down Yahoo Screen, its video portal that was meant to compete with the likes of Netflix and Hulu. The service was started in 2013 and was a part of CEO Marissa Mayer’s video strategy.
Screen was the video hub for the recent NFL game streaming as well as a few original shows and videos such as ‘Community’ and Saturday Night Live.
The move to shut down has come as a spokesperson told Variety that the company is “constantly reviewing and iterating on our products.”
The Yahoo Screen page now redirects users to the homepage and has moved all its video content to the TV and music category on the site.
Yahoo spent more than USD 100 million in producing its own shows. The original series produced by Yahoo contributed to a USD 42 million write down for the company last year.
