Mobile now accounts for 49.7% of China’s retail ecomm sales
Retail mcommerce sales will reach USD 333.99 billion this year in China, according to eMarketer, up 85.1 per cent from 2014. This highlights that mobile accounts for 49.7 per cent of all retail ecommerce sales in China this year.
The eMarketer estimate puts retail mcommerce sales in China at nearly 450 per cent of those in the US. The sales in US are estimated to rise 32.2 per cent this year.
China is ahead of US in terms of retail mcommerce sales, as in US, it represents only 22 per cent of the retail ecommerce total and just 1.6 per cent of all retail sales in 2015. In China, on the other hand, 7.9 per cent of total retail sales are coming from mobile.
This highlights that the retail market in China is more digital, and more mobile than the US market.
“An overwhelming majority of China’s internet users now regularly access the internet via mobile phones—87.4 per cent, vs. 74.6 per cent of US internet users. The sheer number of mobile internet users pushes retail ecommerce activities toward mobile devices in a way that is not yet seen in the US, where desktop computers still factor quite prominently for shopping activities,” said Monica Peart, eMarketer’s forecasting director.
According to eMarketer, digital buyers will spend USD 1.672 trillion on retail ecommerce sales globally this year, or 7.3 per cent of total retail sales.
The report also estimates that by 2019, retail ecommerce will account for 12.4 per cent of total retail sales around the world.
