Karnataka rides the Digital India wave; launches Mobile One

Taking forward Prime Minister’s Digital India initiative, Karnataka’s government launched Mobile One – country’s first and largest mobile governance platform. It was launched by President Pranab Mukherjee. Karnataka is the first state in the country which attempts to bridge the digital divide in India and seeks to provide the same quality of services to citizens of Karnataka.

“‘Digital India’ programme launched in August this year envisages the creation of a digitally-empowered society and knowledge economy by bridging the divide between digital ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’. One of the components of this programme is the availability of government services in real time from mobile platforms. It is in this context that the ‘Karnataka Mobile One’ is an initiative of great foresight,” Mr Mukherjee said at the launch.

The Karnataka Mobile One is multi mode e-governance platform that seeks to provide 4500 services including bill payments, filing income-tax returns to users by dialing 161 on their mobile devices. They can also contact with government authorities informing them about the grievances they are facing related to public services. The mobile application will also be available for download on android of iOS platform. IMI Mobile, telecommunications company has developed the mobile application.

The application has acknowledged the reach of social media and the initiative for announcement and alerts on platforms such as Facebook and Twitter is also underway. Also, practo – search engine for doctor in India has partnered with Mobile One which will help users search doctors online.

As the digital marketing industry is evolving, organisations are launching their services on the mobile platform to reach out to larger consumer base as the number of mobile internet users in India grows. Mobile application provide the easier accessibility and usability of the service and helps in driving the visibility of the services.

Over the course of the last few months, PM Modi has announced a slew of measures in the Digital India space to enforce e-governance in India and get India online. Since the announcement of the Digital India initiative, several multinational technology giants have approached the government with proposals to drive digital advancements in India.
