DMA Digital Diary: It’s all about CES 2015
The buzzword right now is CES, the Consumer Electronics Show, being held in Las Vegas, Nevada from January 6-9. As the tech heads, geeks and marketers, have descended upon the show, announcements are coming in from major tech giants such as Sony and Samsung.
Internet of Things was a concept much spoken of around the conference. “The ‘Internet of Things’ is the hottest topic in tech right now,” said Karen Chupka, senior vice president, International CES and corporate business strategy, CEA.
“It’s all about the opportunity to connect everyday items like cars, home security systems and kitchen appliances to networked devices like PCs and smartphones for greater control and management of our everyday lives,” added Chupka.
“The Internet of Things isn’t about just some devices and the apps that control them. It’s what connects everything we value with the innovations that are centered around our lives,” LG Chief Technology Officer Dr. Skott Ahn said.
BK Yoon, President and CEO of Samsung Electronics said, “The Internet of Things has the potential to transform our society, economy and how we live our lives. It is our job to pull together — as an industry, and across different sectors — to make true on the promise of the Internet of Things.”
Smarter TVs and phones, phablets and wearable technology would be the focus of the show. Sony will feature new products and prototypes highlighting Sony’s 4K Ultra High-Definition technology, High-Resolution Audio and SmartWear. It will showcase the new Action Cam model which is capable of shooting 4K video – a new wearable style of capturing footage. LG unveiled the webOS 2.0 upgraded smart TV platform.
Samsung unveiled products ranging from the 88-inch JS9500 TV to smart kitchen appliances, robotic vacuum cleaner and a business card sized one terabyte portable hard disk.
With new smartwatches by Withings, which have an eight hour battery, and a slew of wearables being unveiled at the show, it will be interesting to see how marketers are thinking of new ways to engage with the consumers across different emerging platforms.
