Creativity is hard, says Vine star Zach King

Vine star Zach King kicked off Social Matters in Hong Kong with behind-the-scenes insights into how the filmmaker creates powerful and engaging videos. Mr King, who has over 2 million Vine followers and 1.4 million Instagram followers, cited three vital questions that he asks himself when creating videos for any platform:

#1 Curiosity – does it inspire wonder?
#2 Clean – can everyone watch it?
#3 Contagious – is it worth sharing?

Citing his latest video, which is set in Hong Kong, he explained how content creators can monetise their craft. He said, “If you focus on creating consistent content that you love, and with which you can grow an audience, sponsorship and the opportunity to work with brands is definitely possible. The future is about deepening the connection with your audience.”

When asked how he maintains the popularity of his videos, Mr King replied, “Creativity is hard. I keep a notebook with me at all times and the ideas evolve over time. Now that I’m also focusing on Instagram – a platform that is surpassing all of my expectations in terms of engagement – I have an extra six or seven seconds of video time to play with, which has changed things up. I notice that the smallest changes to a video, both audio and visual, can make an enormous difference to audience engagement.”
