Instagram adds Boomerang & Mentions to Stories
Instagram’s Stories got three new updates as it added links, Boomerang and Mentions in a bid to move ahead of its rival Snapchat.
All users can now tag friends or add a Boomerang from within the Stories feature itself. However, the links feature is only available to verified accounts at the moment.
With this new update, users can now add navigable links to their stories updates, which will allow people to just open a new link without leaving the app. This can be done at the same time when the Story is created where users can put in the link. However, the link address will not appear on the photo/video, rather the link would be accessible from a ‘See More’ tab on the screen. Instagram is still testing out this feature and would be monitoring it for inappropriate content.
This feature addresses the concern over Instagram’s rival Snapchat not allowing any links within its Stories and can prove useful in attracting more users, and brands as well.
Boomerang which was earlier a standalone app by Instagram has also been added as a feature within Stories. Users can swipe between the normal mode and Boomerang mode to edit their Story as needed.
Another new feature, Mentions, allows users to tag other handles in the Story by using the similar manner of tagging as for normal Instagram photos. Tagged user accounts can then be opened directly from the Story.
Instagram Stories, which was launched in August this year, has more than 100 million daily users.
