Nepal quake: How Knowlarity used missed calls to help

Nepal is slowly picking up the pieces and trying to restore balance following the devastation caused by not one but two equally powerful earthquakes that left the country in ruins. Telecom operators, food processing companies, social media companies and several other business units in India and neighbouring countries have launched initiatives and doing their bit to help the victims of the Nepal earthquake.

Ambarish Gupta, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Knowlarity explained how they wanted to do their bit for the people of Nepal under its CSR activity (Corporate Social Responsibility). Unlike technology chiefs in telecom and social media, Knowlarity launched something easy and yet effective at the same time – missed call.

“A lot of Indians are going to Nepal to offer their aid to the victims of the Nepal earthquake and most of the people in India do not have the option of international calling on their mobile phones. We being a telecom solution company decided to launch a campaign to connect these people,” added Mr Gupta.

“We pray for the safety of people in Nepal. Connect by giving #missedcall to 8030076777 #WithNepal @knowlarity,” Knowlarity posted on its official Twitter page launching its free helpline number.

Post giving a missed call at 803076777, the caller gets a call back within 30 seconds and an interactive voice response asks him to punch in the person’s numbers they wish to connect to. It will patch the first two calls, free of charge.

The system of the missed call campaign was set up within one hour of the second 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Nepal. In a span of three days, the programme has received 50,000 missed calls and 27,000 outbound dialler calls. Mr Gupta also highlighted that the longest call it hosted clocked three hours.
