SAP studies Asia’s youth on international youth day

In lieu of international youth day (IYD) and given that over 60 per cent of the world’s youth are in Asia Pacific, SAP analysed social media and open source data to look at some key statistics on youth in Asia – covering employment, education, civil participation and mental health, since the theme of IYD 2014 is mental health matters.

  • Vietnam, Philippines, India and Singapore have the youngest population (aged 15-24) in APAC.
  • Social media mentions are topped by employment (over 50,000 in the past year), corresponding to the tight job market in many Asian countries, especially South-East Asia’s emerging markets.
  • Thailand boasts the lowest youth unemployment rate and highest youth voter participation rate.
  • Korea has the highest percentage of university/tertiary school enrolment (98%), while youth in Vietnam and India still face challenges (25%)
  • Even in the happiest countries in APAC, mental disorders impact youth, given that depression is the key cause of illness among teens
